Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) is a synthetic, anionic surfactant with many uses, including:
- Personal care products SLES is a common ingredient in soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, body washes, hand wash, and more. It's known for its foaming and lathering properties, which help remove dirt and oil from the skin.
Industrial uses SLES is used in the textile industry to prevent stains on clothes, in printing and dyeing processes, and in petroleum and leather work as a lubricant.
Herbicides SLES is used as a surfactant to improve the absorption of herbicidal chemicals.
Food additive SLES is used as an emulsifier or thickener in dried egg products, some marshmallow products, and certain dry beverage bases.
SLES is derived from palm kernel oil or coconut oil. It's a preferred alternative to sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in shampoos because it can produce a lather while minimizing skin and eye irritation. However, SLES can be too harsh for dry hair, stripping the hair of its natural oils and making it brittle and damaged.
